Wind farm near protected sites faces further planning hurdles

The government has asked the developers of the Norfolk Vanguard offshore wind farm to provide more information about how it will impact nearby European protected sites in combination with other projects.

In a decision letter sent last week, the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) said further details were required on how the “in-combination impacts” of the project, undertaken by Swedish utility Vattenfall, could be mitigated on nearby special protection areas (SPAs).

The project risks affecting populations of kittiwakes at the Flamborough and Filey Coast SPA and lesser black-backed gulls at the Alde-Ore Estuary SPA, the decision letter reads.
