Housing development next to historic hazardous landfill recommended for approval

Plans for the construction of 180 new homes next to a historic toxic landfill site have been recommended for approval by planning officers

On Monday, Amber Valley Borough Council’s planning officers recommended that the development near Stanley Street in Somercotes was approved despite being located next to a former toxic tip, known as LS01.

In a report from the council’s planning department, the council says the landfill, which was in use at a time when there was little regulation of the disposal of harmful waste, was “a major concern”.

Construction firm Taylor Wimpey has already pulled out of the development due to concerns over contamination issues, with developer Gladmans having now taken charge.
