Thames Water fined £300k after workers swept into sewer

Thames Water has been fined £300,000 after three workers were swept along a sewer when a 150-year-old cast iron gate collapsed.

The Victorian penstock failed in the tunnels beneath East Greenwich in August 2017, resulting in minor physical injuries to all three employees who were carrying out preparatory for the Thames Tideway Tunnel. One worker had to be treated for traumatic stress and has been unable to return to work.

Thames Water pleaded guilty to breaching Regulation 3(1)(b) of the Confined Spaces Regulations 1997 at Westminster Magistrates Court this week.
