Waste firm opens clinical treatment plant following ‘body parts’ scandal

Waste management firm Tradebe Healthcare has opened a new clinical waste treatment near Glasgow to “support the waste management requirements for Scotland’s NHS Health Boards”, following the demise of Healthcare Environmental Services (HES).

In February, the Spanish firm was awarded a 10 to 12-year contract from NHS Scotland for the consultancy, collection, transport, recycling, treatment and final disposal of healthcare waste from 18 NHS Health Boards in Scotland.

This came in the aftermath of the collapse of HES, which was responsible for more than 20 NHS trust contracts. HES closed at the end of December 2018, following an investigation into potential breaches of its environmental permits relating to the storage of clinical waste.
