Council fines waste contractor £500k for sending too much waste to landfill

Waste disposal company Amey has been fined £500,000 for breaching its contract with Cambridgeshire County Council by sending too much biodegradable waste to landfill.

The council levied the penalty charge when the Amey failed to meet its contractual obligations to the council for the financial year 2018/19.

The council said Amey missed its target of sending no more than 48,808 tonnes of biodegradable waste to landfill by 29%.

Amey said the missed target was due to damage at its Waterbeach treatment facility caused by storm Erik in February.
