Appeal underway as the Netherlands confirms ‘RDF tax’

The Dutch senate yesterday backed proposals which will see the introduction of a tax of €31 (£26) per tonne of waste for incineration from 1 January 2020.

The proposals were carried after being approved by the Dutch House of Representatives last month. The news comes after the Swedish government last week approved plans to introduce a £6 per tonne tax on refuse derived fuel (RDF) imported from the UK.

The RDF group said the Dutch tax would “force waste down the hierarchy into landfill” in the UK and Republic of Ireland, and “increase overall emissions from waste management by more than 10 times”.
