Committee refuses plans for 180 homes near former toxic tip

Plans for the construction of 180 new homes close to a historic toxic landfill site in Derbyshire have been rejected by councillors, going against a recommendation of approval from planning officers.

Amber Valley District Council's planning committee last week refused to grant outline planning permission for developer Gladman's scheme to build up to 180 homes on a 6.8-hectare site near Alfreton, on land owned by the Diocese of Derby.

A report to the committee said that objections had been received regarding potential contamination at the site from the nearby landfill, known as LS01.
