Environmental non-regression clause absent from Withdrawal Agreement Bill

The government has gone back on its pledge to introduce a non-regression clause for environmental standards in the Withdrawal Agreement Bill, which the House of Commons will vote on this afternoon.

Prime minister Boris Johnson had personally committed to introducing a non-regression clause on the environment during a parliamentary debate on the version of the bill introduced before the general election.

Junior environment minister Rebecca Pow later appeared to water down that pledge, saying Johnson had merely “committed to review how we could bring a non-regression provision on environmental protections into British law”.
