Queen’s Speech: 9 things you need to know

The new government presented its legislative plans on Thursday, including post-Brexit environmental laws and new investment in low-carbon research and infrastructure. Here’s what you need to know.

1 Bills on trade, environment, agriculture and fisheries will return within the first 100 days. While the Agriculture Bill was not explicitly referenced in the Queen’s Speech, government briefing notes confirm that it will be reintroduced promptly along with the Environment Bill, both of which were dropped in the last parliamentary session after MPs voted for a general election.

2 Manifesto pledges on investment will be upheld. The government will publish details of its promised £100bn investment plans in a national infrastructure strategy, to be released alongside next year’s budget. Climate change will be one of the strategy’s “key aims”, the government has said.
