Ineos confirms it will close Seal Sands plant

Petrochemicals giant Ineos has said it plans to close its Seal Sands acrylonitriles plant on Teesside early next year, according to a local MP.

Alex Cunningham, who represents the Stockton North constituency for Labour, said via Twitter that he had received an email from the company confirming its decision.

Ineos had said in October it was consulting with employees “on the potential closure of the plant”, citing “decades of under investment”.

The company says it has invested almost €200m in the site since purchasing it from German chemicals company BASF in 2008, but would require a comparable sum of money just to meet existing environmental standards.
