How ecocide could be made an international crime

What would need to happen for the widescale, long-term and severe destruction of the environment to be made an international crime?

Ecological Defence Integrity (EDI), is a UK-based NGO founded by legal pioneer the late Polly Higgins and eco-activist Jojo Mehta. It runs a global campaign - Stop Ecocide - which aims to make widescale, long-term and severe destruction of the environment an international crime, on par with genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes and the crime of aggression.
