EA drought plans ‘not robust enough’

Environment Agency (EA) guidance on water sector drought plans is not “robust enough” and “more proactive and preemptive measures” are needed to protect the environment in times of water shortage, according to respondents to the agency’s latest consultation.

The EA, which is required to formally review and update its drought plan guidance every five years, updated its draft guidance in September and launched a consultation on it, which received a mixture of responses from water companies, environmental groups and public bodies. 

According to the summary of responses, published last week, the agency received a large number of comments relating to concerns with the environment generally as well as the protection of chalk streams.
