Taskforce launched to combat serious organised waste crime

The government has today announced the long-awaited launch of a taskforce dedicated to tackling serious and organised waste crime.

The Joint Unit for Waste Crime (JUWC) is intended to bring together law enforcement agencies, environmental regulators, HM Revenue & Customs and the National Crime Agency in a collaborative effort to combat crime estimated to cost the UK economy at least £600m a year.

The unit is being established in response to the 2018 Serious and Organised Waste Crime Review, also known as the Noel Review, which warned that the Environment Agency (EA) “has neither the necessary authority, powers nor business model to counter this criminal scourge effectively”.
