Serious pollution incidents in England in 2018 were up 27% compared with the previous year, Environment Agency (EA) figures show, but in the 10 years between 2008 and 2018, the number of such incidents fell by 14%.

According to the agency’s data, published in a report in October, the regulator dealt with 16,454 pollution incidents in 2018. Of these, 533 were classed as “serious” category 1 and 2 incidents, the figures show. Eighty-one incidents were attributed to illegal waste activities, 79 were caused by waste management activities, 77 were caused by farming activities and 56 were caused by water companies, according to the EA.
