The UK will formally leave the EU on 31 January, but what does that mean for environmental law from exit day? Alice Fillan explains.

What happens on exit day?

On exit day, the European Communities Act 1972 is repealed and the UK ceases to be a member state of the European Union. The UK is no longer a party to the EU Treaties, EU law is no longer incorporated into UK law, and the UK is no longer represented in EU institutions, procedures, agencies and offices.
