Strengthen new Environment Bill, urge green groups

Environmental groups have welcomed the re-introduction of the Environment Bill to parliament today but say it needs strengthening with legally binding targets.

Martin Harper, director for conservation at the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), said the previous draft of the bill, published before Christmas, “significantly weakened” the application of the environmental principles by failing to give them equivalent legal status domestically. This part of the bill needs “significant strengthening to ensure that the environmental principles remain secured in law,” he said.
