Environment Bill: Put non-regression principle into law, says think tank

A ‘principle of non-regression’ should be inserted into the Environment Bill to safeguard environmental standards, according to the Institute for European Environmental Policy.

The recommendation was made in a report on the future regulation of agriculture, published today and commissioned by the RSPB, Wildlife Trusts and WWF. In it, the think tank stated that inserting the principle into the bill, or making it “a straightforward legal requirement”, would help reinforce ministerial statements about maintaining high standards. It would also guard against pressures to downgrade environmental protections to ease a US trade deal.
