UK greenhouse gas emissions in 3 charts

UK greenhouse gas emissions fell by 2.1% in 2018 compared with the previous year, according to the latest statistics published yesterday by BEIS.

The figures, which measure the basket of seven greenhouse gases covered by the Kyoto Protocol, show that 451.5 million tonnes carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO2e), were emitted in 2018 compared with the 461 million tonnes in 2017.

Overall, greenhouse gas emissions in 2018 are estimated to be 43.1% lower than they were in 1990, according to BEIS.

The statistical release shows that the fall was mainly caused by a reduction in emissions in the energy supply sector, which were down 6.6% (7.4 MtCO2e) on 2018 levels.
