Southern Water in court over 8,400 illegal pollution incidents

Southern Water yesterday appeared at Maidstone Magistrates’ Court, charged with 51 permitting offences which allegedly took place between 2010 and 2015.

While the Environment Agency (EA) said it would not comment on ongoing criminal proceedings, local media reports have quoted Andrew Marshall, prosecuting for the agency, telling the court that 8,400 unlawful and non-compliant incidents of sewage "escaping" the plants had occurred at 17 sites, 4,000 of which had lasted for more than an hour.
