Reshuffle: Sharma appointed business secretary and COP president

Former international development secretary Alok Sharma will lead the UK government’s team preparing this year’s UN climate talks as part of his new role as business secretary, following a major cabinet reshuffle.

Sharma worked on international climate issues during his time at the Department for International Development, with his experience likely to prove useful for working with developing countries suffering loss and damage from climate change. 

He replaces Andrea Leadsom, who tweeted this morning that she was “particularly proud” of her work on net zero and preparations for the UN climate talks.
