Eustice receives warm welcome after taking DEFRA top job

Farming minister George Eustice will replace Theresa Villiers as environment secretary, Downing Street has confirmed.

Eustice, who has more than five years of junior ministerial experience at DEFRA, left the government under Theresa May in protest at the withdrawal agreement she had negotiated with the EU before being reappointed under Boris Johnson. 

With his deep knowledge of the farming sector, which will be significantly affected by the government’s post-Brexit plans, Eustice had been seen as a frontrunner for the role, although former Brexit secretary Stephen Barclay had also been floated as a possible replacement for Villiers.
