Fake company dumps thousands of tonnes of waste

A landowner in Staffordshire has been duped after thousands of tonnes of illegal waste were dumped in a warehouse by criminals posing as a legitimate business.

According to the BBC, the “fake firm” told the landowner its unit would be used for a different purpose but instead abandoned more than 5,000 tonnes of waste at the warehouse.

An Environment Agency (EA) spokesperson said the waste was dumped under "false pretences".

The EA said it could not release the name of the companies involved as its investigations were ongoing, but Marc Lidderth from the EA said: "The landowner obviously rented this warehouse out to the people that dumped this waste here under false pretences.
