How green is George Eustice?

Our new environment secretary has a strong record of standing up for farming interests, though this green credentials are less clear. Gareth Simkins takes a look at his political record to date.

The appointment of George Eustice as environment secretary has been welcomed by agricultural interests, but his environmental credentials are less clear.

His background is in farming, growing up at Trevaskis Farm, a soft fruit and vegetable growing operation, within his Cambourne and Redruth constituency. It received £2,670.85 in agricultural subsidies in 2017 – an issue which he is now in charge of reforming. His register of interests records an ongoing financial interest in the farm, which some have called a conflict of interest.
