UK’s Paris target will be based on fifth carbon budget

The UK’s commitment to meeting the Paris Agreement on climate change will be based on the dated fifth carbon budget and will not reflect the net zero objective, the government has confirmed.

The announcement, made in a written answer to parliament on Friday by minister for clean growth Kwasi Kwarteng, could pose a problem ahead of the COP26 climate talks. It also appears to run contrary to July’s advice from advisory body the Committee on Climate Change (CCC) that climate policy needs to be reinforced “now”.
