Government set to lift subsidy ban for onshore wind

A decision to lift subsidy restrictions for new onshore wind farms in England is expected to be announced by BEIS later today.

This morning, green campaigners were briefed by policy advisers at Downing Street  that the current ban on subsidising onshore wind farms would be lifted.

The move would reverse a four-year ban implemented by the Tories under David Cameron’s leadership. The party fought its 2015 election on a promise to “halt the spread of subsidised onshore wind farms”. Subsidies were subsequently scrapped and planning policies tightened, resulting in a significant reduction in onshore wind development.
