DoE on the spot as costs of EC wastewater rules tumble

The reasons advanced by the Government for postponing long-promised improvements to rivers in England and Wales were further eroded in February by a revised estimate of the cost of the 1991 EC Directive on urban wastewater treatment. Water regulator OFWAT has now conceded that its initial estimate was 50% too high.
