Ministry of Defence to conduct climate policy review

The Ministry of Defence is to investigate how it can contribute to reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

The review, announced on Friday, will set an emissions baseline and explore how the department could better address sustainability considerations more generally across its processes and policy decisions.

It will be conducted by Lieutenant General Richard Nugee, who formerly held the role of chief of defence people (essentially the military’s head of human resources). He was also chief of staff to the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan, among other roles largely involving personnel management, and served in Bosnia, Kosovo and Iraq.
