Budget 2020: Waste industry welcomes £200 per tonne plastic tax

The waste industry has welcomed confirmation in the Budget that the government will introduce a new plastic packaging tax from April 2022, claiming it would “help to unlock future investment in British recycling infrastructure”.

As part of the announcement, the Treasury said the rate would be set at £200 per tonne of plastic that contains less than 30% recycled plastic. It also published a further consultation on the detailed design and implementation of the tax.

Jacob Hayler, executive director  at waste trade association the Environmental Services Association (ESA), said the tax would unlock investment in domestic recycling and “re-shore valuable materials currently lost to export markets”.
