Budget 2020: Alarm as road-building pledges dwarf green spending

Environmental groups, businesses and climate experts have expressed dismay that new government investment in the green economy pales in comparison to the billions pledged to improve and construct road infrastructure.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak’s pledge to invest £27bn in the road network was greeted with cheers in the House of Commons, but for many observers it was a sign that the Treasury’s promise of a ‘green budget’ had been overstated.

“The government must ensure new spending announced on road infrastructure does not come at the expense of nature,” warned Joan Edwards of the Wildlife Trusts. “It is vitally important that we protect our remaining wild places – for the benefit of people and wildlife.”
