Government rolls out new climate reporting tool for companies

Companies will be able to report on their energy use and carbon dioxide emissions using the same method format as their financial accounts, the government has announced.

In a joint statement, the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, Companies House and the Financial Reporting Council have announced that businesses required to report on their climate change performance will be able to use the XBRL data format, currently widely used for financial data, in their annual reports. 

Under the new streamlined energy and carbon reporting (SECR) regime, quoted companies have to report their total global energy use, the proportion of UK energy use and provide commentary on action to improve energy efficiency.
