Can the clinical waste industry cope with coronavirus?

The clinical waste industry has said there is spare capacity but concerns remain over ageing infrastructure and workforce availability as the country goes into lockdown

The hazardous waste industry is holding daily talks with the government over how to cope with the expected surge in clinical waste as coronavirus spreads across the UK.

Old facilities capable of treating medical waste will be brought online and new facilities will be brought online earlier than planned in a bid to deal with the expected extra waste, according to the Sanitary Medical Disposal Services Association (SMDSA).
