EXCLUSIVE: Water firm fails to disclose sewage spill data

Thames Water is withholding information about sewage spills from dozens of outfalls from the Environment Agency, ENDS can reveal.

During the privatisation of the water industry in 1989, several thousand outfalls were given temporary deemed consent (TDC) because no legal permits for these discharges existed. 

Since then, the Environment Agency has pressed for the industry to submit information about the outfalls so that bespoke permits can be created under the environmental permitting regime and enforcement action taken where unauthorised discharges pollute water courses.
