Nearly one in 10 homes were built in high flood risk areas in 2017/18, according to official data. The figures, published last year by the Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government, show 9% of homes built in England in 2017/18 were in areas of high flood risk, defined as national flood zone 3.
In some areas the proportion of new homes built in high flood risk areas is much higher. For example, 92% of addresses created in Boston, Lincolnshire, were in flood zone 3, the figures show, while the figure was 88% in Kingston upon Hull. Both areas, however, are comprised mostly of flood-prone land.
