Uncertainty over food industry's VOC emissions

A study sponsored by the Department of the Environment (DoE) and the European Commission has found that emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the food and drink industry are poorly characterised and difficult to estimate due to lack of data. But it estimates that the industry contributes 3% to VOC emissions in the EC - and baking, oil extraction and beet processing are major sources which may be targets for future controls.
