Commission launches overhaul of Seveso Directive

Wide-ranging changes to the 1982 EC "Seveso" Directive on major accident hazards have been proposed by the European Commission. Although many of the amendments have already been anticipated in the UK, the new proposal would extend public access to information on hazardous installations, revise the scope of the current law, introduce additional statutory duties on operators to prepare accident prevention policies and safety reports, and possibly require formal arrangements in the UK for separating hazardous installations from environmentally sensitive areas.
