Pollution incident highlights Hickson's effluent problems

A leak of untreated effluent from Hickson & Welch's chemical manufacturing site in Castleford, Yorkshire, in February caused serious damage to a sewage works and significant pollution of the river Aire. The incident follows repeated breaches of the site's consents for discharges to the river - but appeals by the firm have stalled the National Rivers Authority's attempts to bring a prosecution.
