Farmers have been applying sewage sludge – the solid matter left when wastewater is treated – to their land for years. The ‘recycled’ fertiliser supplies a large chunk of the nitrogen or phosphorus that most crops need, as well as other nutrients to help improve soil health. Reliance on manufactured fertilisers is also reduced.
