DEFRA pledge to raise water company penalties a ‘cheap parlour trick’
The environment secretary’s pledge to raise the cap on the civil penalties that the Environment Agency can levy against water companies from £250,000 to £250m has been dismissed by campaigners as “hot air” after it emerged that the regulator has never levied such a fine against a water company, despite having the powers to do so since 2010.
