MAPPED: The storm overflows that spilled sewage 301,091 times in 2022

Storm overflows in England discharged untreated sewage into rivers and the sea 301,091 times in 2022, official data published this week has revealed. Scroll down to explore the data using our interactive map.

Event Duration Monitoring data -  provided by water firms and released today by the Environment Agency - revealed that untreated sewage was discharged into England’s waterways for 1,754,921 hours in 2022 – which is the equivalent of 200 years.
