Net gain tsar Nick White to speak at ENDS biodiversity net gain webinar

Natural England's net gain lead will talk at an ENDS Report webinar next month on what environmental professionals need to know as the clock counts down to biodiversity net gain becoming mandatory in England next year.

Nick White, principal advisor on biodiversity net gain at Natural England, will be joined on the panel by Jessica Lewis, group head of sustainable places at Berkeley Group, which in 2017 became the first homebuilder in England to set out a commitment to achieving BNG on every site. More panellists are set to be announced.

The issue of how hundreds of thousands of new homes can be built without further undermining crucial natural ecosystems became a political hot potato in this year’s nutrient neutrality rows, and the pressure is high on biodiversity net gain policy to work.

However, recent delays to the BNG implementation date proved a heart in the mouth moment for many impacted by the mechanism, and concerns remain across the environmental sector over what some see as a flimsy enforcement mechanism which poses a significant risk of greenwashing and “phantom habitats”. There are fears, too, that local planning authorities lack the capacity to manage the anticipated increase in workload.

Join the webinar, live at 3pm on 13 December 2023, to hear the expert speakers discuss the issues to be ready for in the first six months of BNG becoming law, the extent to which the natural capital markets will be able to make BNG a success, and how to ensure the policy genuinely leads to nature recovery.
