River quality improves, but stays way below targets

The chemical quality of rivers in England and Wales improved by 10% between 1990 and 1992, according to a National Rivers Authority (NRA) report.1 The news will be welcome to the Government and water industry, but river quality remains poorer than it was in 1980 and well short of the long-term objectives set around that time.
