Proposals to curb nitrate leaching may fall short of EC requirements

Proposals to designate six dozen Nitrate Vulnerable Zones (NVZs) within which farming practices will be controlled to prevent nitrate leaching and run-off have been issued by the Department of the Environment (DoE) and the Ministry of Agriculture.1 The proposals appear to be flawed in protecting only waters currently used for public water supply rather than wider requirements of an EC Directive.
