Government announces decisions on sewage treatment standards

A total of 36 sensitive areas and 82 less sensitive areas throughout Britain have been designated by the Government under the terms of the 1991 EC Directive on urban wastewater treatment. The decisions will determine the standards of treatment which sewage works discharging into these areas will require. Ministers sided with the water industry and against the National Rivers Authority (NRA) when they disagreed over further candidates for designation as sensitive areas - and show no signs of accepting pleas for extra protection of wildlife sites suffering from eutrophication caused by sewage discharges.
