Cement kilns and hazardous waste - the debate heats up
Cement companies are rushing to use solvent and hazardous wastes as supplementary fuels in a bid to reduce their operating costs. In response to mounting public concern and lobbying from incinerator operators - who fear that a substantial chunk of their market is under threat - the Government has now issued guidance on the procedures that cement companies must follow when carrying out trial burns with waste-based fuels. HM Inspectorate of Pollution (HMIP) says that the move simply clarifies its existing policy, making it plain that no long-term use of the fuels will be permitted until it is convinced that no adverse environmental effects will result. Kiln and incinerator operators are divided over the likely impact.
