Steel and aluminium industries battle over car market

Audi has launched the first mass market car to be made from aluminium, trumpetting its lightweight and thus fuel saving design. Steel producers pre-empted the launch with a study claiming that steel cars have a lower energy consumption - if the whole life-cycle is considered.1 The arguments are now raging over the role of the two metals in the future of the motor industry.
