Retailers fail to take up recycled carrier bags

Recycled low density polyethylene (LDPE) carrier bags are superior to virgin bags on energy and water consumption and emissions to air by significant margins, according to a study carried out for recycled bag producer Alida Recycling.1 The company says that recycled bags are also similar in price and quality to those made from virgin material - but more than 90% of bags used by UK retailers are still being made from virgin LDPE.
