Towards a waste management strategy

The Government has at last accepted the desirability of a national waste strategy. A draft is to be issued later this year and could bring significant long-term changes to the waste management scene. Meanwhile, the Government has broadly accepted a controversial recommendation from the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution (RCEP) that incineration with energy recovery should be expanded - and will now have to respond to a report on recycling from the House of Commons Environment Committee which makes important recommendations on creation of markets for recycled materials and waste minimisation.
