Staking out the battleground over the future of landfill

Landfills taking biodegradable waste should be designed, operated and restored so as to be as dry as possible for ever, the Department of the Environment (DoE) recommended eight years ago. Its new advice will shortly be: make landfills as wet as possible to promote rapid waste degradation. But the DoE's new-found enthusiasm for the bioreactor landfill is not matched everywhere in Europe, where a competing philosophy of waste pre-treatment and stabilisation before landfilling is gathering momentum.
