Strengthening link between particulates and health risks

Evidence linking airborne particulates to a wide range of adverse health effects is now "remarkably consistent", according to a leading US epidemiologist. Research effort is now focused on understanding the biological mechanisms at work - but experiments by Japanese scientists have already shown that particulates from diesel combustion have unusually potent effects on respiratory tissue.
