Study challenges standards for bathing water quality

The results of a Government-funded study of the health effects of sea bathing have called into question the basis of EC standards - as well as the Government's objections to a proposal to amend them.1 According to its authors, the study gives the most precise data yet on the risks of catching gastrointestinal illness and could herald a more informed approach to bathing water standards.
